Sue Ann Cheney, 74, of Henrico, VA, went to be with the Lord on December 8, 2024. She is preceded into heaven by her beloved daughters, Jessica Jean Cheney and Clara Romaine Cheney; parents, John Mellinger and Clara Mellinger; as well as two brothers and two sisters. Sue is survived by her loving husband of over 55 years, Richard Cheney; grandson, Gavin Kashiwabara; great grandson, Richard Kashiwabara-Martin; sister, Clara Fruchtl, as well as many nieces and nephews, and of course, her two four-legged family members, Nick and Bear, all of whom will be grieving her passing.

Born in Lancaster, PA, Sue and Richard met when he had been invited to a dance at her nursing school, and six months later had eloped to start their lives together. They lived in both Cuba and Newfoundland while he was serving his nation in the Navy, and eventually settled in the Richmond area. She went on to have a long career with the Virginia State Police in communications, where she was indispensable as a dispatch supervisor. Sue also was very active in the Virginia C.O.P.S., an organization close to her heart that helps the families of fallen officers.

Above all, Sue was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and she cherished all of those roles in her life.

Sue will rest 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at Bliley’s, 8510 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, VA 23228, after which the family will be receiving friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The rosary will be prayed for her beginning at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12 p.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 8200 Woodman Road, Richmond, VA 23228, with interment to follow at Signal Hill Memorial Park.
