Obituary - Sallie Baker McCutcheon Johnston

JOHNSTON, Sallie Baker McCutcheon, 65, passed away on November 5, 2022. She is survived by her daughters, Catherine “Katie” Baker Johnston and Julia “Julie” Johnston Oliver (Richard); two granddaughters, Sadie McTyeire Oliver and Elizabeth “Eliza” Shea Oliver; grandson Patrick Edward Oliver; sister, Mary Beth Rexrode (Ben); and her green-eyed tabby cat, Bay. Sallie was predeceased by her parents, Charlotte and Andrew McCutcheon, and her husband Edward “Ted” Johnston. As a teenager, she proudly served as the first female page in the Senate of Virginia, appointed by the late Lt. Governor J. Sargeant Reynolds. She was a 1975 graduate of Douglas S. Freeman High School and a 1979 graduate of Mary Baldwin College. Sallie dedicated her professional life to bettering the lives of the many students she met over the course of her teaching career. She spent several years in early childhood education before becoming an exceptional education teacher at J.R. Tucker High School. She spent twenty years at Tucker before retiring in 2019. Sallie had intense pride for her daughters following in her footsteps in the educational field, specifically the dedication to and advocacy for students with learning differences. In retirement, she volunteered for the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation, kept up with her former students, and spent time with her grandchildren. Sallie was an avid animal lover, rescuing and doting on many, many cats and dogs over the course of her life. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, service, and love. She will be missed dearly. A memorial service will be held at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church at Forest and Patterson Avenues On November 19, 2022 at 10:30am. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Andrew H. McCutcheon Scholarship Fund at J. Sargeant Reynolds, 1701 E. Parham Rd, P.O.
