Well, my Mama, Ernestine Harris finally told my daddy, Roy C. Harris, Jr. that it was okay for him to join her in Heaven. Roy (Daddy, GeGe, Sonny) passed away on June 26, 2021. Roy was born in Hopewell, VA (but really spent most of his life in Colonial Heights) on December 6, 1928. Roy leaves Mary Elizabeth Harris Jones (Rick), Meredith Donahue (Charlie) and Matthew to remember the time and dedication that he put into their lives. Roy enlisted in the United States Navy in 1946 and when he returned, he spent 40 years at Allied Chemical before retiring and moving to Richmond to care for his grandchildren with Mama. Daddy loved his grandkids above and beyond everything else in this life and especially those baseball games where he cheered his Little Buddy on. Meredith was his Pretty Girl and he was proud and pleased that he was able to visit her in both NYC and DC. Fried catfish, fishing, planting tomatoes, cucumbers, and reading the paper cover to cover were some of his favorite things. Despite his health, Daddy was able to attend Meredith’s wedding and Matthew’s commissioning ceremony into the Air Force before VCU Medical School. Roy was a long-time member of West End Baptist Church and also attended Discovery United Methodist Church where he helped with the Dignity Food Pantry. In lieu of flowers, please just be kind to one another or donate to your local food pantry. Roy will be laid to rest beside his beloved Ernestine at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 1. Special thanks to Ali Riyaz (PT) from Kindred Home Health, Dr. Christopher Nicholson, Cardiologist, and to my cousins and best of friends. The Rev. Brian Harrison of Kindred Hospice will be conducting the service.
