On February 19, 2022, ten days after his 82nd birthday, “Furry” Murray Rosenberg of Philadelphia, PA, a huge Phillies baseball fan, lover of 50s music and an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan, a solid third baseman and wonderful husband, father, and grandfather to his four grandchildren and friend to many peacefully passed away while surrounded by family. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2017, he lived the last several months as an active and glowing member of the Bickford Memory Care community. Growing up in Northeast Philadelphia, one of his favorite pastimes was telling stories, one he regaled in was the story of “the shot” he hit from the Solis Cohen playground into the window of a home across Princeton Avenue, right down the street from his family home. The “Philly Kid” was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Temple University where he earned his BS degree in Organic Chemistry, Seton Hall University where he earned his MBA and was close to finishing his PhD. He worked for Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and lectured at universities across the US. He worked many years as a research pharmaceutical chemist for several major pharmaceutical companies and had numerous publications. He moved his family to Richmond to head the technical information department at Philip Morris, USA. Murray retired as an information scientist at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of VA. As an active member of the Richmond community, Murray was a fixture at Tuckahoe Little League, where he coached both his children and won several championships with the major league Phillies. He was also a board member at Beth Israel and The Library of Virginia, President and founding member of Congregation Or Atid, and an active member of the Richmond Gem and Mineral Society. Amongst Murray’s many hobbies and pastimes, were reading, photography, and working in the yard. He enjoyed traveling the world, family beach vacations, collecting rocks and sea treasures, snorkeling and kept returning to the serenity of Anguilla BWI with his beloved wife, Sheila. However, most of all Murray loved and was so proud of his family and we will immeasurably miss him.

Murray was married to his wife Sheila for 58 years, and they had known each other for 64 years! Murray was father to Matthew (Richmond, VA) and Rachel (Denver, CO). He was preceded in death by father Albert, mother Goldie and sister Lois.

The family asks in lieu of flowers, if you wish to honor Murray that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of America (alz.org) or the American Heart Association (heart.org)
