MOORE, Mary Mathews, 94 went to be with the Lord on January 8, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was preceded in death by George Franklin ‘Frank’ Moore, her husband of 54 years and love of her life; parents, Alice Mathews Brookings and William Mathews; and siblings William (Billy) Mathews, Bernard (Willie) Mathews, Gertrude Brock, Charlotte Freeman, and Arthur (Toby) Mathews.

She is survived by her four sons, Carl (Nell), Earl (Karen), John, and Curtis (Paula): six granddaughters Heather Davis (Eric), Jenna Moore, Rachel Gresham (Adam), Terri Penick (Jay), Kimberly Shrum (Wesley), and Tanya Alford (Steve); six great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin Mathews; and three sister-in-laws she loved very much, Rita Mathews, Peggy Mathews, and Atlee Moore, along with a host of nieces and nephews.

A talented cook/baker, practiced seamstress, and lifelong gardener, Mary was known for her delicious pound cakes, which she baked for every occasion, and her ability to feed a crowd at a moment’s notice.

A longtime member of Four Mile Creek Baptist Church, she served on the Kitchen Committee for many years and cherished the friendships she made there. She delighted in children, and opened her home as a foster parent to several children who she loved as her own.

She dedicated her life to volunteer work, and tackled many community projects with her friends at the Varina Women’s Club. She served as the Cafeteria Manager at Mehfoud Elementary for many years and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Mechanicsville chapter.

Mary spent her later years at Covenant Woods Retirement Community, where she served on the sewing guild and was a volunteer on the healthcare wing until her own health declined.

The family will receive friends from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Friday, January 13 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S Laburnum Ave. The service and interment will take place on Saturday, January 14 at 11am at Four Mile Creek Baptist Church, 2950 New Market Road.
