Lorenz Kenney 'Ken' Makoutz, 93, son of Lorenz and Anna (Kenny) Makoutz passed away peacefully on April 8, 2021 at the home of his daughter following 3 months of hospice care. He was born in Evanston, Illinois on January 5, 1928. He grew up in the suburbs of Chicago Ill during the great depression and later recession. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ken served in the Army twice; once at the end of World War ll in Japan and later during the Korean War in Korea with the 13th Combat Engineer Battalion of the 7th Infantry Division. Early in his career, he moved his family from Chicago to Grand Inagua, Bahamas, where he took a job with Morton Salt to help build a salt ship loading facility that would revolutionize how the loading task was performed. After moving back to the states, he settled in northern Virginia and worked for the Army at Fort Belvoir. At one point in his career, he caught the entrepreneurial bug and bought a small strip center in Fredericksburg Virginia. Here, he owned and operated a local grocery store. He eventually sold that business and went back to work for the General Services Administration in Crystal City, Virginia where he retired.
He was a long-time member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Spotsylvania, VA where he was an active member of the choir. For the past 20 years he has been a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Henrico, VA where he was an active member of the choir until 2019.
Survivors include his younger brother David Makoutz of MD; son Timothy (Cheryl) Makoutz of Herndon, VA; daughter Catherine (Jon) Garmon of Glen Allen, VA; son Jeffrey Makoutz of Stafford, VA; daughter Danielle (Jay) Gibrall of Glen Allen, VA; 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Ken was predeceased in death by his parents, Lorenz, and Anna; his wife Marian of 55 years on March 2, 2011; and his sister, Joan.
Ken learned to play the piano as a child and played, often by ear, no sheet music, until he was 91. Music has always been an important part of his life. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church ATTN: Music Ministry, 8200 Woodman Road, Henrico, VA 23228. A memorial mass will be scheduled at a later date at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. A private interment will be held later.
