Junior Moss Carter of Appomattox and Henrico, Virginia died peacefully on January 16th. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Jane Robertson Carter. He is the son of the late James Moss Carter and Alpha Thomas Carter and the grandson of the late Doctor William Edward Carter and Margaret Ann Moss.

He was preceded in death by brothers James Carter, Harold Carter and sister Viola Carter.

Junior has two devoted children, Lisa Carter and Michael Carter (Rebecca), three grandchildren, Cora Carter Moerner, Grace Moerner and Virginia Carter, special sister-in-law, Margaret Banton, who assisted Jane as a devoted caretaker during Junior’s last years, sisters-in-law Shirley Kimbro and Janie Carter and many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

Junior (Junie, Big Jim, James, Lieutenant) worked for the Henrico County Fire Department for twenty-nine years, retiring as a Lieutenant, and was honored as Firemen of the Year in 1977 by Ruritan National. Before he joined the Fire Department in 1961, he graduated from Appomattox High School and served in the U.S. Army and the Army Ready Reserve. While he was working at the Fire Department, he also worked for the Virginia Division of Forestry as a Forest Warden and Tower Operator. In retirement, his passion was his grandchildren, auctions, sales, and the art of the deal. He was a member of Fort Lee Baptist Church in Henrico, Virginia.

Visitation for family and friends will be held 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, January 23 at Nelsen Funeral Home on 4650 South Laburnum Avenue. A service will be conducted at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, January 24 by Pastor Jordan at Fort Lee Baptist Church on 2727 Charles City Road.

Graveside burial will take place immediately following the service at Washington Memorial Park on 6217 Memorial Drive.

A light meal will be served at the church following the burial.
