Joan Beck Willis of Henrico County, 85, beloved mother, wife, grandmother and aunt peacefully passed away from this life Monday, January 20, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents Page “Doc” Beck and Velma Beck as well as her husband John Willis and daughter Mary Willis Vital. Surviving her are her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Evie Willis. Son-in-law David Vital. Grandchildren, Maddie Roberts (Dylan), Sophie Willis and Benjamin Vital.

Joan graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia and then attended The College of William and Mary where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After working in education for many years, she received her Masters Degree from Virginia State University.

Joan retired from Hanover County Public Schools as a Principal at Cold Harbor Elementary School after over 35 years in the education field. She worked for many school districts over her career including Hanover County, Henrico County, Chesterfield County and the City of Hopewell. She began her career as a music teacher and choir director and later crossed over into administration. She also taught adult education classes after retirement.

Joan cherished music and she was an accomplished vocalist and pianist. She sang in and directed several church programs and community choral societies including St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hopewell and Crestwood Presbyterian Church in Richmond. Joan also attended St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Henrico County for many years.

Joan was most recently a member of Varina Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir, substituted as organist and assisted with other musical programs. Joan was also on the Vestry, was in the Episcopal Church Womans group (ECW), and she helped with distribution at the church’s Food Pantry.

Joan enjoyed many pastimes including bowling, swimming, walking and participating in various races. She had an immense love for family and many close friends. She had an extraordinary personality and sense of humor. In her later years, she helped out and spent invaluable time with her grandchildren. She was totally devoted to them and showered them with endless love and treasured experiences.

We are deeply grateful for the above and beyond care given by the staff of The Havens, especially her primary caregiver Nicola. We would also like to extend the sincerest appreciation for everyone that had assisted in Joan’s care but especially the long time dedication and compassion provided by Mike.

The family will receive guests on Friday, January 24th, 2025, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave, Henrico, Virginia 23231 from 4:00 PM to 7:00PM. A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, January 25th, 2025 at 1:00PM at Varina Episcopal Church, 2385 Mill Road, Henrico, Virginia 23231.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Association.
