James "Jay" Edward Cox, Jr., was born on September 21, 1941 to the late James Edward Cox, Sr. and Audrey Celeste Atkinson-Cox.

Jay passed peacefully in his home surrounded by family into the arms of his Savior on January 19, 2024. Jay was preceded in death by his son, John David Cox. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Mary Anne Abell Cox; his three sons, James Edward Cox, III, Andrew Nathan Cox, and Clyde Joseph Cox; daughters in law, Kelly and Stephanie; and beloved grandchildren, Christian, Kaycie, Lynsey, Carter, and Emily; and a host of beloved Cox family cousins and relatives.

Jay was raised and spent his entire life in the West End of Richmond where he had a multitude of cherished friends. He was a graduate of Douglas Freeman High School where he played football under the leadership and influence of Coach Bill Long. Jay was a dedicated teacher and coach of wrestling and football at J.R. Tucker High School. He worshipped at Immanuel Baptist Church where he served as a teacher of youth and as a deacon. Jay also served on the Henrico County Area Mental Health & Developmental Services Board, and Parents for Community-Based Services. He is a graduate of RPI. He also received his master’s degree from the University of Richmond in Education Administration.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Henrico, VA 23229. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 12 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, 3601 Monument Avenue, Richmond, VA 23230. Interment will be announced at a later date.
