Helen Smith Bray, 84, of Richmond passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2021.

She was born in Richmond, VA to Harry Marshall and Lena Croswell Smith. She was a graduate of Varina High School, Class of 1955, and married the love of her life, Roy Thomas Bray, Sr., on September 22, 1956. Helen retired from the State Corporation Commission in 2002. She was a loyal member of Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church and dedicated her life to serving the Lord in charge of the kitchen committee and numerous other positions and leadership roles within the church. She always made herself available to helping others and never missed a worship service. Helen was truly a remarkable mother, grandmother, and friend to all. She was a caring, strong, independent, and sweet natured person to be around. Her strong faith was a leading example for others.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Roy Thomas Bray, Sr. and a sister, Mary Smith Johnson.

She is survived by her sons, Roy Thomas Bray, Jr., “Tommy” of King William, VA and Marshall Scott Bray, “Scott” and his wife, Kim of Little Plymouth, VA; four grandchildren, Tabatha Gore, Shawn Bray, Jessica Bray and Sarah Bray; two great-grandchildren, Erin, and Lily; one sister, Elsie Pearce; and several nieces and nephews.

The viewing and service will be private on Monday, February 22, 2021 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231.

The interment will also be private at Washington Memorial Park immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
