Gus Elmore Haynes, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 12, 2022.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lena and Roy Haynes; brothers, Morris, Preston, Ray, Charles, Paul and Hugh; and sisters, Elizabeth and Peggy.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Dunkum Haynes; children, Wayne (Susan), Vicki (Rick), Tricia (Will) and David (Liz); grandchildren, Kristen (Allen), Lauren, Jessica (Robert), Taylor (Steph) and Evan; sister, Ella Plunkett; and several beloved great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Gus was a member of Fort Lee Baptist Church. He served 27 years in the U. S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Gus was also a member of the VFW # 98, the Sandston Moose Lodge and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 144.

Gus was happiest when surrounded by family and food and was the grandpa who always had M & M packets hidden in his shirt pocket.

The family will receive friends Sunday, February 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231.

A funeral service will be held Monday, February 21, at 12 noon at Fort Lee Baptist Church, 2727 Charles City Road, Richmond, VA 23231.

Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park.
