Fervan C. Huffer, 98, of Richmond, passed peacefully in her home on September 1, 2023.  She was born on April 16, 1925, in Iron Gate, Va. to Nora Coffey and Chalmer Crutchfield.  Fervan married her loving husband, Wayte Huffer, in 1950, who preceded her in death as well as her brothers, Ruel and Dennis “Jack”, all military veterans.  She became a licensed practical nurse through on-the-job training at King’s Daughters Hospital in Staunton, Va.  She adored being a nurse and cared for those in need for over 40 years.  Fervan served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts, was a member of American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Unit #1 and joined Lakeside United Methodist Church in 1974.  She was a devoted Mom, Meme, GMeme, Aunt and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness.  Family was at the core of Fervan’s heart.  All those who knew her received cards with adoring notes that would bring a tear to your eye. Her mind remained sharp, as she was more interested in hearing stories from others than telling her own, displaying a true essence of a loving and caring soul.  Fervan loved to host family, friends and colleagues in her home, especially after the 3 to 11 shift had ended, holiday meals with an abundance of food to include her infamous macaroni salad and of course her fried oysters on Christmas morning.  She leaves behind three children, Stuart, Lynne James and Lori Southward (Tom); seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  She left her mark on everyone she met and leaves with us a legacy of love and kindness.  The family would also like to thank Dr. Dunnington, Dr. Ro, RNs Roberta Hunt and Micki Mitchell from VCS, Erik Sandvig, PT and his team, members of Lakeside UMC who generously uplifted Fervan’s spirits with their cards, holiday gifts and visits and to the attending staff at Bon Secours  Hospice.  Please join us as we celebrate this remarkable life at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue. Officiating at her service will be Rev. Kevin Smith.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2023 in Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Va.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dignity for the Aged, 7 Jefferson Ct., Poquoson, Va.  23662 or dignityfortheaged.org.
