Douglas W. “Pop” Ashworth, Sr., 78, of Henrico, passed away January 1, 2021 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melton and Katherine Ashworth; brothers, Melton Jr. and Tommy Ashworth. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Mildred Ashworth; children, Douglas, Jr. (Stacey), Don (Patti), Robin, Jeff (Kaye); sister-in-law, Harriette Farrish; the Wells Family, Wayne (Barbara), Nancy (Stan), Billy (Terry); eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (BJ). Doug retired from Henrico County after 35 years and was the first Employee of the Year for them. He was a volunteer firefighter at Lakeside Station 5 for approximately 20 years; a 30 year life member at Lakeside Rescue Squad and a longtime coach and umpire at Lakeside Little League. He was awarded the Community Builders Award for Outstanding Service to the community. A private visitation will be held at Bliley’s, 8510 Staples Mill Road, on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. “He will always be our hero.”
