Doug H. Macomber, 82, of Henrico, Va., passed away into the arms of Jesus on January 28, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Phyllis Macomber of Winnetka, Illinois; and brothers, Dane and Donald Jr. He is survived by his wife, Carole; brother, Bruce; stepbrother, Jim Holbrook; children, Marcia and Scott (Karen); grandchildren, Anya, Nick and Sasha; stepchildren, Cheryl (Brian) Murphy Pacious and Shawn (Katie) Murphy; as well as numerous stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. A veritable Renaissance man, Doug was known as "The Odd Job Artist" in the greater Richmond area, where he fixed up innumerable broken railings, window sills, damaged brickwork and a myriad of other repairs. Upon receiving his B.A. in History from Denison University and then his M.B.A. from Northwestern University, he began his career as a financial analyst at Allstate Insurance in the Chicago area. He eventually opened his own mailbox/shipping/packaging business near his hometown of Winnetka, Illinois, before moving to Virginia in 1996 with his wife, Carole. Doug was a lifelong trombonist. He played in high school, university, community bands and his church. In Richmond, Doug played in the Richmond Concert Band for many years. An avid woodworker and carpenter, he built a sailboat, which he regularly sailed on Lake Michigan, a wooden chess set with his daughter and many other projects. An ardent railroad and steam train hobbyist and engineer, Doug was often found running the steam trains on weekends at the Hesston Steam Museum in LaPorte, Ind., as well as tinkering with Lionel hobby trains at home. He was known for creating spectacular deep dish pizzas, gourmet burgers on the grill and even holiday fruit cakes using his father's recipe. In Richmond, Doug served as a trustee at Third Church, where he and Carole were active members for more than 25 years. The epitome of the "Good Man," this wonderfully loving, funny, kind and multitalented father, brother and husband will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Third Church, Richmond, Va. or a charity of your choice.
