David James Schwemer, 74, of Glen Allen, VA passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, in his home, surrounded and comforted by his family.

David began his journey in Lynchburg, Virginia, chosen by his adoptive parents Les and Evelyn. He thrived through his grade school years, leading him to a bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from Randolph-Macon College and two Master’s degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University and Shenandoah University, in Social Work and Business Administration, respectively. He began his career in healthcare leadership with the Community Services Board in Culpepper, VA. He followed a call to servant leadership for several other health agencies and hospitals in multiple states, finally landing back home in Virginia, where he became Director of Operations for Fresenius Kidney Care, before retiring in 2020. Subsequently, he graciously returned to Fresenius as a patient, where their compassionate care was greatly appreciated by David and his family.

David is survived by his best friend and wife, Patti Schwemer; his daughter, Gretchen Schwemer-Smith (Jason); his son, Drew Schwemer (Kristen); a step-daughter, Jessica Phelps (John); four special grandchildren, Liam, Gil, Sean, and Lena; and his brother, Tim Schwemer (Tangie). He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Lester and Evelyn Schwemer.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. on Monday, March 4 at Affinity Funeral Service Richmond Chapel 2720 Enterprise Parkway, Richmond, VA 23294. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 pm. in the funeral home chapel.
