Charlotte Newby Mitchell, 88, of Richmond passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her children on Monday, July 22, 2024.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents Maude Shelor Newby and Eric Kenneth Newby of Radford, VA, her husband, Ira Jackson “Jack” Mitchell Jr., and her siblings, Norma Jean Pettigrew, E.K. Newby, and Neata Belle Stier. She is survived by her sons, Ken and Mike (Angie); daughter, Diane; granddaughters, Amanda Simpson (Marc) and Jenna Johnson (Nick); great-granddaughters Emma, Anna, and Sloane; and several nieces and nephews.

Raised in Radford, VA, Charlotte moved to Richmond and worked for Southern States, E. A. Holsten, and retired from Henrico Public Schools as the school nurse at Maybeury Elementary in 1991. She loved fishing (and fish feared her), camping, laughing, and the joys of playing the penny slot machines. Her travels took her to 49 states and all of the Canadian provinces and territories. She enjoyed her family greatly and leaves them with a treasure trove of memories and adventures.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the American Heart Association, or the American Diabetes Association.
