Betty Bishop passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky at the age of 92. She was born and raised in her hometown of Abingdon in the humble hills of southwest Virginia and was the younger child of Edward Bryan Hagy and Edna Roberts Hagy. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Emory & Henry College, Betty taught for more than 27 years in grades 3 through 5 in multiple states including Virginia (Quantico Marine base and Richmond), South Carolina (students from Parris Island Marine base) and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. She loved her students and the life long friends she made through her career. Betty especially loved the “CLEOs” from Crestview Elementary, her teacher Bunco group, and many other cherished friends from the Richmond, Virginia area where she happily resided for 56 years. During her last years in Richmond, Betty was a resident at Brandermill Woods Senior Living Community. In 2022, at the age of 90, she bravely chose to relocate to Louisville, Kentucky to be closer to her daughter, Erica. Betty lived independently at The Grand Senior Living Community, where she made many new friends with whom she enjoyed dinners, tasty cocktails, games of Rummikub, and adventurous trips around the city. Betty was an incredibly loving mother and Mimi. She cherished her family and over the years enjoyed gathering and visiting with them, especially on summer vacations at the Windune beach house in Duck, North Carolina. Betty is survived by her three children, Erica Thompson (Jim), Barry Bishop (Karen), and Jayne Whitney (Jack), as well as six loving grandchildren, Graham Thompson (Nicole), Kelsey Thompson (Corey), Brian Bishop, Allison Bowles (Evan), Alex Whitney, and Chris Whitney. Betty was also blessed with six great grandchildren and seven loving nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her loving brother, EB Hagy, Jr., and her husband and the love of her life, Henry Lee “Pat” Bishop. Visitation will be on Monday, January 22nd, 4 pm - 7 pm at Woody’s at Parham Chapel, 1771 North Parham Road, Richmond, VA. A private family burial service will be held on January 23rd.
