Anne Marie Cullingsworth Akers, longtime resident of rural Varina, passed from this life on October 16, 2023 at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin Lee and Mary Childress Cullingsworth, Sr., her brother Edwin L. "Ducky" Cullingsworth, Jr., her sister, Mary C. Tignor, and brother-in-law Albert H. Tignor, Jr.

Anne was born on November 21, 1938 in Richmond, VA. As a youth, she was active in Job’s Daughters, a Masonic affiliated leadership organization. She graduated with honors from Highland Springs High School in 1957 and later attended J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

Anne worked at the Virginia Department of Transportation, both downtown and Elko locations, and at Battlefield Veterinary Clinic. She later retired from the federal government after 11 years of service at Defense General Supply Center (Bellwood), where she earned the nickname “Sheriff Anne.” Anne also served her community as a Henrico County Officer of Election (Glendale).

Anne was known for her unique sense of humor, her toughness, and her dedication to family and friends. An animal lover, she rescued a variety of wildlife over the years but had a special soft spot for chihuahuas, of which she raised 13 in total. She leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of resilience.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Jerry A. Akers, her daughter, Karol, her grandchildren, Diona and Alex, and their father Hassan, her great-grandson, Dara, her grandson-in-law, Jon, her sister-in-law, Rose, as well as extended family.

No service is planned. Her family will be observing her passing in private.
