Obituary - Ann Shirley Johnson Sangston

SANGSTON, Ann Shirley Johnson, died peacefully at home on December 19, 2023 after a short battle with cancer. She was born September 16, 1939, in Clarksville, Virginia. She graduated from Bluestone High School, Radford University and earned her Masters in Education from Longwood. She began her career as an English teacher in Henrico County where she met her husband of 55 years, Jim, when teaching at Douglas Freeman High School. She later worked at Central Fidelity Bank, from which she retired in 1998.

Ann was very involved in the Tuckahoe Women’s Club, the Westham Garden Club and the Great Readers Book Club, which has been together for more than 50 years. She was a passionate sports fan and especially loved cheering on her beloved Wahoos. Always up for an adventure, Ann loved to travel, go to theater and play bridge. She enjoyed spending her summers in Avon-by-the Sea, NJ and was a devoted Gigi to her three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellen Daniel Johnson and Waverly Hurt Johnson, and her eight siblings. She is survived by her husband James Allen Sangston, Jr.; her daughter Ann-Tyler Sangston Connell (Matt); three grandchildren Mackenzie Connell, Dylan Connell and Ryan Connell; her niece Michele Mulligan and her two children Connor Mulligan and Katie Mulligan; her nieces Jill Stevens (Jerry) and Gail Bailey (Steve); and her nephew Hal Weeden.

The family would like to thank Dr. Paige Rackliffe, Dr. Amira Ibrahim, the doctors, nurses and staff on the oncology unit at Henrico Doctors Hospital Forest, Hospice of Virginia, and Latasha Roney for taking such good care of Ann.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church (903 Forest Avenue, Richmond, VA 23229) at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2024. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Ann J.
