Obituary – Andrew Phillips Brown

Andrew Phillips Brown, age 75, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018, at Westminster Canterbury in Richmond. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Evelyn Brown of Richmond, Va.; and is survived by his sister, Bette B. Hodges; nephew, William S. Rogers (Katie); great-nephews, Colin and Owen Rogers; and numerous cousins.

Andy was born January 5, 1943. He graduated from Douglas Freeman High School in 1960, where he excelled in basketball and was co-captain of the varsity basketball team. He attended the University of Virginia for one year. He enlisted and served in the in the U.S. Marine Reserves from 1963 to 1968, with an honorable discharge. Upon discharge, he resumed his education and enrolled at Quinnipiac College in Connecticut, where he graduated in 1967 with Bachelor of Science in accounting.

He worked as a senior financial specialist manager in Montgomery County, Md., where he retired after 33 years in November, 2005. After retirement, he relocated to Lynchburg, Va., where he became a member of Quaker Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed his many friendships made through church and volunteer work. Andy generously spent over 5600 hours volunteering at Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist Hospital from 2009 to 2017.

He also donated his time one day a month to Meals on Wheels. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Ave., Richmond, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the charity of your choice.
