Henrico County Public Schools’ Highland Springs community meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 19, has switched to a virtual-only format in order to comply with new measures announced by Gov. Northam to combat the spread of COVID-19.

The meeting, which had originally been planned to incorporate both virtual and in-person options, will discuss the Achievable Dream Academy at Highland Springs Elementary School. The meeting will take place using Microsoft Teams. Alicia Atkins, Varina District School Board representative, will attend. The meeting will involve a presentation and an opportunity to ask questions and share thoughts and recommendations. No registration is required.

The meeting is scheduled to run for one hour. Citizens may join and participate at https://tinyurl.com/hsprings-community-meeting.

Last week, the Henrico School Board heard an update about the program that showed low rates of literacy among students at the school, something that upset board members.

In January 2017, the board approved a public/private partnership with An Achievable Dream, a nonprofit group based in Newport News, to bring its program to Highland Springs Elementary.

As part of the agreement, HCPS provides basic curricula and staffing, student services, transportation, food service and maintenance, while An Achievable Dream creates a learning environment with technology and extensive extracurricular and cultural activities. Students learn life skills, ethics, etiquette, conflict resolution, healthy living and financial skills. The program also operates in public schools in Newport News and Virginia Beach.
