Parents, staff and community leaders celebrated the opening of Northstar Academy's new gymnasium and community center, but it was the students who starred at the ceremonial ribbon-cutting on April 25.
Although elected officials – including U.S. Congressman Rob Wittman and Virginia Delegate David Owen – were among the dignitaries who attended the ribbon-cutting, they remained seated throughout the event, and student performances ruled. Highlights included cheers from the cheer team, a show of student art from the previous night's talent show, and a speech by Will Griffin, a recent graduate who now attends the Career Academy.
To top off the ceremony, Emerson – the student with the honor of sinking the ceremonial first basket – aced her goal on the first attempt.
Founded in 1996, Northstar is a private nonprofit school for students and alumni who have a disability and face academic, physical, or social challenges. Its Career Academy helps students develop professional and technical skills as they prepare for transition from high school to employment.
