Gov. Ralph Northam today is expected to order Virginians to stay at home in light of the steadily growing COVID-19 outbreak in the state. Northam will hold his daily press briefing at 2 p.m. to provide details.

Virginia’s total number of confirmed cases surpassed 1,000 with this morning’s announcement by the Virginia Department of Health that 1,025 people have now been diagnosed with the virus. The state also has experienced 25 deaths related to COVID-19 – with eight coming from the Canterbury Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Henrico’s Far West End, where more than 40 residents and staffers have tested positive.

Henrico Health Director Danny Avula yesterday said that three other senior living communities – Beth Sholom Rehabilitation in the Far West End, the Masonic Home of Virginia in Eastern Henrico and another unnamed facility – also had each reported several confirmed cases.

Northam’s order is expected to allow people to leave home to buy groceries, receive medical attention, pick up prescriptions and perform other critical actions. Maryland and North Carolina Monday enacted similar measures.
