New traffic patterns at I-64-Airport Dr. interchange

Table of Contents

New traffic patterns are in place at the Interstate 64-Airport Drive interchange in Eastern Henrico. The Virginia Department of Transportation enacted the changes Nov. 17 as part of its work to replace a bridge at the interchange and eliminate two ramps there.

New traffic signals have been activated on Airport Drive at the bottom of the newly constructed I-64 spur ramps. The ramp from Airport Drive south to I-64 east will be temporarily closed during the project, and a new left turn at the new traffic signals will guide traffic until the ramp reopens.

Northbound Airport Drive traffic has been shifted towards southbound lanes to allow for bridge demolition on I-64.

Ultimately, the project will eliminate two of the four cloverleaf ramps at the interchange:

• The ramp from I-64 west to Airport Drive south (Exit 197A).

• The ramp from I-64 east to Airport Drive north (Exit 197B).

All I-64 east/west traffic will use a new single Exit 197 in each direction to access Airport Drive.

VDOT traffic engineers determined that eliminating those two ramps would allow for better traffic flow through the region. The $35 million project is expected to be complete by late 2022.
