New traffic pattern begins on I-64 near Airport Drive next week

Table of Contents

There will be a new traffic pattern on I-64 East near Airport Drive in Sandston beginning July 22.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is working to replace the bridges at the interchange, which is necessitating occasional traffic alterations.

Beginning at 6 p.m. that day, all eastbound I-64 traffic will switch to the newly constructed bridge. The new, single Exit 197 will remain open. There will be no changes to Airport Drive (Route 156).

The primary purpose of the $35 million project is to replace the I-64 eastbound and westbound bridges over Airport Drive, increase vertical clearance on Airport Drive and perform all necessary approach work to accommodate this vertical increase. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed in late 2022.
