New traffic pattern begins Aug. 25 on Airport Drive

Table of Contents

Another new traffic pattern will begin next week on Airport Drive in Sandston.

Beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 25, the Virginia Department of Transportation will begin implementing the new pattern as part of the I-64/Airport Drive bridge replacement and interchange improvements project.

The shift will move all northbound and southbound lanes toward the outside shoulders in both directions. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction. The purpose of the switch is for crews to remove the temporary pavement located within the median and begin construction of the permanent median.

Weather permitting, the traffic shift will be complete by Aug. 27. I-64 travel lanes and ramps will not be affected by the shift.

The primary purpose of the $35 million project is to replace the I-64 eastbound and westbound bridges over Airport Drive, increase vertical clearance on Airport Drive and perform all necessary approach work to accommodate this vertical increase. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be complete in late 2022.
