New poetry collection by Henrico author to be released in September

Table of Contents

Henrico-born author J. Matthew Helms’s first book, The Song of Circe and Other Simple Musings, will be released Sept. 14.

A poetry collection described as reflecting on “the love and disdain that define the human soul, beckoning us to explore within ourselves the darkest corners of our oldest legends,” the book contains passages that place new perspectives on the myths of gods while exploring the human emotions.

Selected poems include “The House of Sadness,” “The Quest of Circe,” and “Of Dreams.”

Helms is a project manager for a local custom construction company who has been writing poetry for years. It began playing a more crucial role in his life five years ago – when he made the choice to become sober – as a way to express the wide range of emotions that stem from battling addiction.
