The new law requires unregistered farm vehicles to display a Department of Motor Vehicles-issued permanent farm use placard on panel trucks, pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 7,500 pounds or less. Placards are $15 and are valid for the life of the vehicle. Unofficial farm use tags no longer will be acceptable for these vehicles as of July 1.

The placards must be displayed on the front and back of the vehicle at all times. A first violation of the law will result in a fine of up to $250, and subsequent violations will be considered traffic infractions that carry $250 fines.

"As farm vehicles are key to agricultural productivity, it is important that Virginia farmers can continue to use them in their operations while preventing farm use tags from being used on other vehicles inappropriately," said VDH Commissioner Joseph Guthrie. "We hope those who have not already done so will apply for their DMV-issued permanent farm use tag today."
