The Henrico School Board voted May 12 to approve a revision to a policy governing nonresidents attending Henrico County Public Schools.
The former policy allowed students of HCPS employees who live outside of the county to attend traditional schools in Henrico — but it was limited to K-5 students, and there was a tuition associated with enrollment.
The revised policy permits students in grades K-12 who have guardians working as HCPS employees to attend HCPS schools, and tuition is waived. (It will be evaluated annually.)
“It’s a win for our teachers,” said School Board member Micky Ogburn, who represents the Three Chopt district and sits on the policy committee. “I'm hoping that the teachers will, if they are so inclined, take advantage of it.”
Henrico School Board Vice Chair Kristi Kinsella, who also sits on the policy committee, said the revisions were made in response to employee requests, and in an effort to recruit, retain and reward employees.
The revised policy is subject to school capacity; if a school is full HCPS officials will work to identify a nearby school and work with staff on placements.
The Henrico School Board voted to waive the 30-day review period and approved the revisions Thursday.
