Table of Contents

COVID-19 cases continued to spike in Henrico this weekend, as the county witnessed the most cases it’s seen on a single day – and during a two-day period – in six months.

Henrico experienced 226 new cases Aug. 14-15 – the most since the same number of cases were reported Feb. 17-18, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health. Henrico reported another 81 confirmed cases Monday.

The 115 cases reported Saturday were the most on a single day in the county since 126 were reported Feb. 17.

Henrico is now averaging 88 new cases per day during the past seven day, according to the VDH. Three new hospitalizations of Henrico residents related to the virus also occurred during the weekend, but no deaths have been attributed to the virus in the county since Aug. 7. Hospitalizations continue to be rare, with the county averaging just one new one each day during the past seven days.

The highest number of confirmed cases of COVID reported on a single day in Henrico was 326 (Jan. 16).

The new cases are occurring primarily in younger people; 65% of the 540 new cases reported in the county between Aug. 9-16 occurred in those 39 or younger. About 27% of those new cases occurred in people 19 or younger, while about 20% occurred in people in their thirties.

One Henrico child nine or younger was hospitalized by the virus during the past week, as was one child or teen 10 to 19.

Henrico’s seven-day positivity percentage among PCR testing encounters (7.6%) and among rapid testing encounters (8.8%) as of Aug. 12 both were slightly lower than the statewide averages.

In the past five days, almost 1,900 county residents have received their first dose of COVID vaccine, and nearly 1,300 have become fully vaccinated, according to VDH data. In total, 182,617 Henricoans now are fully vaccinated – about 55.2% of the county’s total population.

VDH data shows that in the state’s Central health region, which includes Henrico, there have been only 839 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among the 704,902 people in the region who are fully vaccinated; that's just 0.119%. Thirty-eight of those people required hospitalization, and 13 (or 0.0018%) of them died.
