Sun Country Airlines Tuesday announced plans to provide twice-weekly service between Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport and Richmond International Airport starting May 19.

“We applaud Sun Country Airlines for seeing the immediate potential of flights between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Richmond,” said Perry J. Miller, president and CEO of the Capital Region Airport Commission. “As this is a high-demand destination for Richmond region travelers, we have been in contact with the airline over the last several months, seeking just such an announcement.”

Initially, Sun Country is offering RIC-MSP flights on a seasonal basis through the Labor Day weekend.

“We’re excited to welcome travelers from the Richmond area to the Twin Cities via this new, nonstop route,” said Grant Whitney, chief revenue officer at Sun Country. We can’t wait to showcase Minnesota culture and hospitality to guests who are eager to create lifelong memories and transformative experiences.”

Sun Country Airlines currently flies to more than 80 destinations and operates more than 100 routes throughout the Caribbean, United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America. It has a fleet of 61 airplanes (49 for passenger service, 12 for cargo service), all Boeing 737s.

Sun Country Airlines began operations in 1983 with a single Boeing 727-200 jetliner and grew gradually until financial challenges forced it to suspend operations in 2001. It then weathered financial fraud and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for a second time in 2008 before emerging three years later when the Davis family of Minnesota purchased it for $34 million.

The family then sold the company to affiliates of Apollo Global Management in 2017 and it became publicly listed on the NASDAQ exchange in early 2021.
