Officials will mark the lines with colored flags, spray paint, or both, indicating which type of utility is underground and where to avoid digging. Once the project is complete, the flags can be removed.
Even small projects such as installing a fence, putting in a new mailbox, planting a tree, or laying a patio require that 811 be called in advance.
Utility lines can vary in depth due to factors such as erosion, previous digging projects, and uneven surfaces.
