A motorcyclist died yesterday after running a red light at more than 100 mph and crashing into a pickup truck in Northern Henrico County shortly after 3 p.m.

A Virginia State Police trooper observed the man, who was driving a Honda motorcycle with a missing license plate, as he traveled onto the eastbound Interstate 64 exit for northbound Interstate 95. The trooper pulled in behind the motorcycle to initiate a traffic stop near the 81 mile marker on I-95, but when he activated his emergency lights and sirens, the motorcycle sped off.

The trooper began to pursue, and the motorcyclist took Exit 82 for Chamberlayne Avenue and then traveled north on Route 301 in excess of 100 mph.

He ran through a red light at Route 301 and Wilkinson Road, then attempted to do the same at the intersection of Route 301 and Diane Lane but collided with a Nissan Titan pickup truck that was making a legal left turn at a green light onto Route 301.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet but was ejected and died at the scene. His remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy, examination and positive identification.

The adult male driver of the pickup truck was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.
