A bipartisan coalition of 41 attorneys general, including Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, are calling on Meta to take steps to protect users from account takeovers by scammers. Account takeovers occur when someone breaks into a user’s account and changes passwords, effectively hijacking the account and blocking out the rightful owner.
“Protecting users’ accounts and personal information should be among the top priorities for social media giants like Meta. The rise in account takeovers is concerning and puts the privacy of nearly every American at risk,” said Miyares.
In a letter to Meta Platforms, Inc, the attorneys general asked the company to increase its staffing to respond to account takeover complaints, invest in account takeover mitigation tactics, and adopt new procedures for users to protect themselves, such as multi-step authentication measures.
