The office of Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares received and processed more than 6,800 consumer complains in 2024, and Miyares is encouraging Virginians to continue reporting their concerns.

“My office’s Consumer Protection Section ensures that Virginia consumers are protected from bad actors who undermine the economy and exploit fellow Virginians,” said Miyares. “Victims of scams or other fraudulent activity should feel confident knowing they can lean on us as a resource.”

In 2024, the Attorney General’s Consumer Section received and processed a total of 6,836 consumer complaints. Of these, the top 10 complaint subjects were:

• automotive sales;
• internet sales and service;
• credit, loans and debt collection;
• warranties and rebates;
• home improvement, service and repair;
• timeshares and recreational property;
• automotive service and repair;
• medical/health professions;
• towing;
• landlord/tenant.

The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section serves as the central clearinghouse for consumer complaints in Virginia and includes a Dispute Resolution Unit to facilitate contact between individual consumers and businesses to assist with the resolution of consumer complaints. The Dispute Resolution Unit and Section’s investigators resolved or closed 3,754 consumer complaints, with consumers recovering $134,385.
