Yvette Lee, a mathematics and computer science teacher at J.R. Tucker High School, recently was named one of five finalists for the 2021 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching by the Virginia Department of Education.


Sandra Joireman, Weinstein Chair of International Studies and professor of political science at the University of Richmond, has been selected as a research fellow for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Joireman, who specializes in property rights and post-conflict migration, is part of an international team that will investigate how communities are impacted by the intersection of climate change and violent conflict. In collaboration with CARE International UK and the Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research, she will recommend responses to support community resilience and long-term food security. Joireman’s fellowship appointment begins this month and will run through June 2022. She has previously worked on projects with the United States Agency for International Development and the World Bank.


Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam recently announced additional appointments to his administration. Eric English of Henrico was appointed to the Board of Juvenile Justice. English is chief of police with the Henrico County Police Division. John A. Mahone of Glen Allen was reappointed to the Board of the Virginia Public Building Authority. Mahone is a former deputy secretary of finance and former deputy chief of staff in the Governor’s Office.


Emaan Mughal of Glen Allen will serve as an executive board member for the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and Doctors Without Borders at New York Institute of Technology.


Breanna Prentis of Henrico and Brooke Moody of Glen Allen were accepted into Montclair State University in New Jersey for the 2021-22 school year.


Sofia Cordero of Henrico and Tripp Termini of Glen Allen were accepted into the University of Utah for the 2021-22 school year. Cordero, who also is enrolled in the Honors College, will pursue a degree in computer science. Termini will pursue a degree in physics.
