Larissa McMahan

Larissa McMahan of Glen Allen is one of two recipients of the Elizabeth McRae Scholarship at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. Named for the college’s namesake and renowned Southern teacher Elizabeth McRae, the scholarship offers full tuition for all four years and is awarded based on the student’s performance in both the essay and interview competitions on Scholars Day. Incoming students who have been accepted into the Lees-McRae Honors Program compete for prestigious scholarships and Trustee Awards on Scholars Day. McMahan plans to pursue Religious Studies and History.


The following local James Madison University students participated in alternative spring breaks trips around the country March 11-18: Amanda Weitzenhofer (Habitat for Humanity in Alabama), of Glen Allen; and Alex Douglas (Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina), Naomi Coleman (Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina), Alex Pegram (Catholic Charities Migrant and Refugee Services in Kentucky), Jamie Panko (Redwood National Park in California), and Marcus Rand (Dismas House of Indiana), of Henrico. Each student focused on service in their destination community and each trip highlighted a social issue such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness.


Pulkit Iyer of Henrico and Balazs Kaszala and Pallavi Natarajan of Glen Allen earned Faculty Honors for the fall 2022 semester at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. This designation is awarded to undergraduate students who earn a 4.0 academic average for the semester.


Evan Walker of Henrico recently was inducted into the Pi chapter of the Chi Alpha Sigma national collegiate honor society at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. Membership is open to all student-athletes who have earned at least a 3.4 grade point average and have junior academic standing following their fifth semester of study.
