For standing up for gun violence prevention and making a commitment to govern with gun safety in mind, Delegate Schuyler VanValkenburg (D-Henrico) received the 2019 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction. Since its inception after the tragedy at Sandy Hook School, Moms Demand Action has established a chapter in every state of the country. As a member of the Special Select Committee for School Safety, VanValkenburg has advocated for legislation related to keeping Virginia students safe, including adding stricter penalties for improper gun storage around minors, stronger reporting rules for lost or stolen weapons, and broadening a state law that limits when minors can possess firearms.


The following local students recently were named to the spring 2019 dean’s list at Clemson University: Anna L. Davis, Holden Layne Davis and Grace Danielle Malla, of Glen Allen; and Zachary H. Appel, Charles McClain Graeber, Jane E. Holsten, Kathryn Nicholas Surgner and Tatum E. Timmerman, of Henrico. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.50 to 3.99 for the semester.


Alexander Edward Tarr of Sandston was named to the spring 2019 dean’s list at Iowa State University. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.50 to 4.00 for the semester. Tarr is a third-year student majoring in Architecture-Professional.


Abigail Hewitt of Henrico graduated cum laude May 4 from North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C. Hewitt earned a bachelor of science degree in Biology. A baccalaureate degree student whose cumulative grade point average is at least 3.5 graduates cum laude.


Clara Giorgis, daughter of Daniel and Ryan Giorgis of Henrico, was named to the spring 2019 dean’s list at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. Giorgis is a rising junior Russian and International Studies major. She is a graduate of Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School.


The following local students earned faculty honors for the spring 2019 semester at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta: Paige Rutherford, of Henrico; and Riya Agrawal and Brock Smith, of Glen Allen. This designation is awarded to undergraduate students who have a 4.0 academic average for the semester.

To earn president’s list honors, students must earn a grade point average of 3.900 or higher.


The following students from Henrico County were named to the spring 2019 dean’s list at the University of Delaware: Jarrett Bender, Elizabeth Fleming, Abigail Markel and Jacob Sitison. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.33 or higher.


Alexandra L. Daniel of Henrico and Deema Abdel-Meguid of Glen Allen were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2019 semester at Boston University. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher.


The following local students graduated in May from the University of Alabama: Patricia Claire Calkins, Allison Todd Mitchell, Shelley Elaine Palmer, Carrie Davisson Ragsdale and Laura Mitchell Valentine, of Henrico; and James David Cover, Benjamin Clay Dayton, David Terrance Edwards, Benedict Edward Elia and Logan Nicole Strusky, of Glen Allen.


Richard Atkins of Henrico recently graduated from Bellevue University in Nebraska. Atkins earned a bachelor of science degree in Business.
