The following area students were named to the spring 2019 president’s list at Clemson University in South Carolina: Callie Conway Borges, Katie Marie Goodman, Emma Grace McKenney and Christine Kimberly Schultz, of Henrico; and Olivia Carter Williams, Riley Mason Buckenmaier, Katelynne M. Collins and Rachel L. Corbin, of Glen Allen. To earn president’s list honors, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average for the semester.


Cristhian Martinez of Henrico graduated magna cum laude June 1 from Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minn. Martinez earned a biology degree.


Two students from Glen Allen recently completed intense, hands-on research projects at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts. Tabitha Gibbs, a robotics engineering major, was a member of a student team that completed a project through the WPI project center in London. The project was titled “Evaluating Museum in a Box for the London Postal Museum.” Surya Vadivazhagu, a computer science major, was a member of a student team that completed a project through the WPI project center in Mandi, India. The project was titled “Evaluating Sericulture Feasibility in Himachal Pradesh.” At WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to addresses an important societal need or issue.


NOVA of Virginia Aquatics, Inc. has announced that nationally recognized coach Norm Wright will join NOVA as associate head coach in September, in advance of assuming the head coach position for the 2020/21 swim season. Geoff Brown, founder and head coach of NOVA, led the search effort that culminated in the hiring of Norm Wright. Wright's two previous head coach positions include Shenandoah Marlins (SMAC, Virginia) and the Northern Kentucky Clippers, a team he shepherded to USA Swimming Gold Medal status in 2017. He has also been named a coach for several National Junior teams and has placed swimmers on both U.S. international teams.


Melanie Raff of Henrico was named to the spring 2019 dean’s list at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Raff is a sophomore majoring in Elementary Education.


Stephen Oley of Henrico graduated May 22 from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Pa. Oley earned a bachelor of science degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences.


Maggie Taylor of Henrico was named to the spring 2019 dean’s list at Dean College in Franklin, Mass.


Saswat Mishra of Henrico graduated in May from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Mishra earned a doctor of philosophy degree in Mechanical Engineering.


Sophie Williams of Henrico was named to the spring 2019 dean’s list at the University of Iowa. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher.


Theron Powell of Glen Allen was named to the spring 2019 dean’s list at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tenn. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 for the semester.

Andrew Bains of Henrico graduated in May from Clarion University in Pennsylvania. Bains earned a MSLS Information and Library Science degree.


Ashraf Syed of Henrico graduated May 3 from Southern Arkansas University. Syed earned a master of science degree in Computer and Information Science.


Qadira Muhammad of Henrico was inducted into the Mu of Virginia Chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE), the national economics honor society, in May at Mary Baldwin University. ODE recognizes scholastic attainment and honors outstanding achievements in economics.


Michael Quinan of Henrico graduated cum laude May 19 from Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. Quinan, a graduate of Mills E. Godwin High School, earned a bachelor’s of art degree.


Gov. Ralph Northam recently announced additional appointments to his administration. Linda Melton of Glen Allen and T. Nicole Hebbe of Henrico were appointed to the Fair Housing Board. Melton, who was reappointed to the Board, is a community outreach officer at Fulton Bank. Hebbe is general manager at MHE, Inc.
