Jordan Harris

Temple University sophomore Jordan Harris of Henrico was promoted to the role of director of finance of PRowl Public Relations, effective February 21. Harris, who previously was an account associate, currently works on the Strategic Marketing and Communications account. She is pursuing a degree in Public Relations with a minor in Digital Media Engagement. Harris also is interning at Philly PR Girl as a marketing assistant. PRowl Public Relations is Temple University’s first and only student-run PR firm. PRowl handles a variety of Integrated Communications tasks and helps partner clients from within the Temple University community and the Greater Philadelphia region. The firm is accredited through the Public Relations Student Society of America.


Christen Samaan of Henrico, a fourth-year medical student at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, received his residency placement March 15 as part of the National Resident Matching Program’s “Match Day.” During Match Day, all fourth-year M.D. students around the country simultaneously open their envelopes to learn where they will spend the next three to seven years training in specialties. Residencies typically begin July 1. Samaan matched at Penn State Hershey Medical Center-PA for Medicine-Preliminary followed by Penn State Hershey Medical Center for Dermatology. According to the NRMP, the 2019 Main Residency Match was the largest in history, with more than 43,000 applicants.


As part of its 35th anniversary celebration, Henrico-based Shepherd’s Center of Richmond recently honored two of its longtime volunteers for their contributions to the organization. Arthur Gunlicks and Suzanne P. Wiltshire both received the organization's Distinguished Service Award, presented by President Hal Costley. Gunlicks, a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Richmond, served as president of the center from 2012-2014. For 13 years he led the Education Committee, which is responsible for recruiting teachers and organizing courses for the Open University, the center’s lifelong learning program. Wiltshire is a former foreign language teacher and administrator who served at both public and private schools until her retirement from St. Catherine’s School after 38 years. She was chairman of the Public Relations Committee of the Shepherd’s Center for nine years and, as a member of the Education Committee with Gunlicks, helped arrange 60 lunch speakers a year for the Open University. In 2012, her French students established a scholarship in her name to provide tuition for those who need financial help for the Open University.


The following local students were named to the honor’s list for the fall 2018 semester at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Va.: Kourtney Goodman, of Glen Allen; and Qadira Muhammad and Avera Pearson, of Henrico. To earn a place on the honor’s list, students must receive a grade point average of 3.75 to 4.00 for the semester.


Shinique Smith of Henrico graduated December 2 from SUNY Oneonta in New York. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in Africana and Latino Studies.
