The following area students were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester at The University of Alabama: James David Cover, David Terrance Edwards, Benedict Elia, Claudia Emerson Long, Mackenzie B. O’Barr and Caroline Victoria Pedante, of Glen Allen; and Jack Connor Johnson, Patricia Claire Calkins, Finley Cabell Griffin, Shelley Palmer, Margaret Kelly Smith and Laura Mitchell Valentine, of Henrico. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.5 or greater grade point average for the semester. The following area students were named to the president’s list at UA: Lauren Hope Golmon and Emma Belle Snearer, of Glen Allen; and Barclay A. Jumet and Carrie Davisson Ragsdale, of Henrico. To earn president’s list honors, students must earn a grade point average of 4.0 for the semester.


The following area students were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester at Boston University: Alexandra L. Daniel and Faith A. Reed, of Henrico; and Deema Abdel-Meguid, Brett Hoffmann and Nivetha Saravanan, of Glen Allen. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.5 grade point average for the semester.


Stella I. Okoli and Donna M. Mixner, of Henrico, graduated in May from Boston University. Okoli earned a master of science degree in Computer Information Systems and Mixner earned a master of criminal justice degree in Criminal Justice.


Mary Parkhurst, of Henrico, graduated May 12 from Emmanuel College in Boston, Mass. Parkhurst received a bachelor of fine arts in in Individualized Major in Studio Art. Parkhurst graduated with distinction in the field of concentration.


Mackenzie Irene Flemmons, of Glen Allen, graduated May 12 from Greensboro College in North Carolina. Flemmons earned a bachelor of arts degree in Elementary Education.


Cameron Sharma

Cameron Sharma, a student at George H. Moody Middle School, is one of 10 finalists for the 2018 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. The competition recognizes students, grades 5-8, who use scientific thinking to create an innovation that will improve lives in their local communities or globally. Students submitted short videos describing their new invention or idea and judges selected 10 finalists for their exceptional science acumen, spirit of innovation and ingenuity, and effective communication skills demonstrated in their entry videos. Sharma created uFlu, an algorithm that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify personalized flu vaccines. He will partner with a 3M scientist through a summer mentorship program where they will meet virtually to turn his concept into reality. Sharma and the other finalists will compete in October during a live event for a grand prize of $25,000 and the title of America’s Top Young Scientist.


Cassia Waligora, of Henrico, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester at Wheaton College in Illinois. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.5 or greater grade point average for the semester.

Rachel Hernandez, of Henrico, graduated magna cum laude May 23 from University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Pa. She earned a master of occupational therapy degree.


Melissa Lang, of Henrico, graduated May 20 from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in Medford/Somerville, Mass. Lang earned a doctor of veterinary medicine.


Mary C. MacLean, of Henrico, graduated cum laude May 13 from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y. MacLean, daughter of Neil K. and Mary A. MacLean, studied abroad in Budapest, Hungary while at HWS.


Katherine Hall, of Glen Allen, and Lindsey Hutchison, of Henrico, recently graduated from Simmons College in Boston, Mass. Both students earned a master of science in Library and Information Science (Archives Management).


The following area students were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester at Clemson University: Madeline M. Blankenship, Riley Mason Buckenmaier, Rachel L. Corbin, Holden Layne Davis and Jeremy A. Frantz, of Glen Allen; and Matthew H. Richardson, Scott E. Fath, Charles Mcclain Graeber and Kate Nicholas Surgner, of Henrico. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.50 to 3.99 for the semester.


Hannah Polaski and Meagan Justice, of Henrico, were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a minimum 3.50 grade point average for the semester.


Daniel Allen, of Henrico, recently graduated from Ithaca College in New York. Allen earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in Theatrical Production Arts.
