Comcast NBCUniversal has awarded approximately $83,000 in scholarships for the 2018-19 school year to 74 Virginia students as part of its annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program. The program, funded by the Comcast Foundation, is a one-time, $1,000 scholarship awarded to the best and brightest high school seniors for their community service, academic performance and leadership skills. Henrico recipients were: Aashi Agarwala, Henrico High School; Jordan Anderson-Murray, Highland Springs High School; Montasia Braxton, Varina High School; Tyler Hendricks, Freeman High School; Stephanie Kasko, Hermitage High School; Danny Lew, Tucker High School; and Karola Preda, Deep Run High School. Comcast, joined by the Virginia Secretary of Education Atif Qarni and other elected officials and school administrators, recognized the students at a special event held at the Virginia State Capitol on Thursday, May 10.


Bailey McInnis and Micah Buller, of Henrico, graduated May 6 from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va. McInnis earned a bachelor of arts degree in Liberal Arts. Buller earned a bachelor of science degree in Biochemistry.


The following students from Henrico County recently were initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, a collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines: Daniel Emirzian, Northwestern State University of Louisiana; and Dillard Patton, Old Dominion University.


Colby College student Peter Barkey-Bircann, of Henrico, received the Anthropology Award for Outstanding Performance in the Major at the student awards ceremony May 8.


The following local students were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn.: Ryan Casey and Bradley Covington, of Glen Allen; and Elizabeth Ludovico, of Henrico. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 for the semester.


Newberry College recently awarded Robert Valentine, of Henrico, the Male Individual Performance of the Year award at the 2017-18 Wolfies Athletic Awards banquet. Valentine concluded his sensational senior campaign accumulating 554 points and connecting from beyond the arc 109 times this season. Valentine ranked in the top-ten in several SAC statistical categories including second in total points, third in average points per game, and sixth in three-point percentage. He also lit up the national stage currently occupying the fourth spot in Division II in treys made per game with an average of 3.76.


Ravindra Bangari Golkonda, of Henrico, recently graduated from University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky. Golkonda earned a MS in Information Systems Security.


Derrick Reeves, of Sandston, was named to the honor roll for the spring 2018 semester at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn. To qualify for honor roll status, students must earn a grade point average of 3.70 or above for the semester.


Leigh Ann Martin, of Glen Allen, recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Martin received a master of library and information science degree.


Meredith Palmer, of Glen Allen, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester at Harding University in Searcy, Ark. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.65 or higher grade point average for the semester. Palmer is a junior advertising major.


Emily Disler, a 2014 graduate of Collegiate School, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a minimum 3.71 grade point average for the semester. Disler is the daughter of Dr. David G. Disler and Dr. Robin S. Disler, of Richmond. She is majoring in biological chemistry.


The following local students graduated May 5 from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.: Kyle Zachwieja, of Glen Allen; and Charles Thoma and Alec Reddy, of Henrico. Zachwieja earned a bachelor of arts in English. Thoma earned a bachelor of science in accounting. Reddy earned a bachelor of arts in psychology.
