Officer Jacob R. Gilliam, of Sandston, graduated Mar. 29 from the 90th Basic Law Enforcement Academy of the Crater Criminal Justice Training Academy. In a ceremony at Good Shepherd Baptist Church, Gilliam was honored for covering 1,300 Department of Criminal Justice Services-mandated training objectives during the 26-week academy in Prince George County. Upon returning to Richmond, the Capitol Police officer will undergo extensive field training with division-certified field training officers before being assigned to his shift.


The following local students graduated in December 2017 from The Graduate School at James Madison University: Girisan Sivasubramanian, of Glen Allen; and Janett Alease Kinney and Lynsey Marie Deudne, of Henrico.


The following local students graduated with honors in December 2017 from James Madison University: Michael Stanley Stone (Magna Cum Laude, Geology), Megan Larissa Ciszek (Magna Cum Laude, Theatre and Dance), Kendall Elisabeth Hudgens (Magna Cum Laude, Health Sciences), Rachael Lois Linthicum (Cum Laude, Writing Rhet & Tech Comm.) and Ann Harris Crews (Cum Laude, Nursing), of Henrico; and Samantha Rachel Bergman (Cum Laude, Psychology), of Glen Allen.


Carol Parish

Carol Parish, professor of chemistry at the University of Richmond, was honored for her excellent contributions to education with a 2018 Outstanding Faculty Award presented by the State Council of Higher Education and Dominion Energy. A member of the faculty since 2005, she is a theoretical and computational chemist who teaches at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and mentors many undergraduates in outcome-oriented research. Her research program investigates the fundamental molecular nature of a wide range of physical phenomena. In the last 15 years, she has produced 34 research publications, many of which are coauthored with her undergraduate students. She has been the recipient of many national awards including a Fulbright Fellowship and the Stanley Israel ACS Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences, among others. Also, she received the Council on Undergraduate Research Goldwater Mentor Award and the Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award and was named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society. At the University of Richmond, she has received the Distinguished Educator Award and the Outstanding Mentor Award. During a celebration event at the Jefferson Hotel in February, Professor Parish and 11 other winners received a $5,000 cash award underwritten by the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation and a commemorative engraved award.


The following local students recently were inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, a collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines: Hunter Hogan (Longwood University) and Mackenzie Tabler (Longwood University), of Glen Allen; and Joshua Dietz (West Virginia University), of Henrico.


Henry Roberts and Katie Wood, of Henrico, were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.6 or above for the semester.


Tamiyah Perry, of Henrico, recently graduated from Simmons College in Boston, Mass. Perry earned a master of social work degree.
