Hannah Polaski of Henrico recently was honored at the Muhlenberg College Honors Convocation, a ceremony that recognizes academic achievement, community engagement, leadership and commitment to the college. Polaski, a junior, received the Woman’s Auxiliary of Muhlenberg College Music Scholarship for outstanding performance as a student of music.


The following local residents recently earned degrees from Western Governors University: Katharine Newman and Christina Smoot, of Glen Allen; and Joshua Crawley, Venyse Hicklin, Kaitlyn Simila, Engoh Bellamy, Caitlin Smith and Kimberly Robinson, of Henrico.


James Reese Borkowski of Glen Allen graduated May 9 from Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. Borkowski earned a bachelor of science degree in Psychology.


Stephen Baker of Glen Allen and Hannah Durrette of Henrico graduated May 8 from Bob Jones University. Baker graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in Sport Management. Durrette earned a bachelor of science degree in Educational Studies.


The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants recently announced its officers and Board of Directors for the 2020-21 fiscal year. Anne B. Hagen of The Masonic Home of Virginia in Henrico is the new chair-elect. She was sworn in at the VSCPA’s annual business meeting May 14.


Makela Koch of Henrico was named to the fall 2019 dean’s list at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Koch is pursuing a bachelor of science in dental hygiene at The Forsythe School of Dental Hygiene at MCPHS.


Shenandoah University placed first among 20 participating NCAA DIII schools in the 2019-20 community service end-of-year Helper Helper rankings. Helper Helper is a web-based app that tracks and coordinates community service events, and it is used at more than 200 NCAA institutions. From July 1, 2019 to May 7, 2020, approximately 600 Shenandoah athletes from its 22 sports teams totaled 6,310 hours of community service with an economic impact of $160,463. Nicholas Sims of Glen Allen was an athlete on one of the four Shenandoah teams that logged the most community service hours: women's and men's cross country and track and field teams.
