Local and state officials helped to unveil the latest Henrico County Historical Marker Oct. 24 at Anderson Cemetery, adjacent to Biltmore Baptist Church in Glen Allen. Among special guests on hand for the unveiling were former Henrico School Board member Lloyd Jackson, state Sen. Jennifer McClellan, Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas, representatives from the offices of senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine and members of Henrico's Board of Supervisors.

One of the oldest African American cemeteries in Glen Allen, Anderson Cemetery includes the graves of ex-slaves, freeborn blacks, farmers, pastors, business leaders and war veterans. Among the churches with members known to be interred in the cemetery are Mount Olive Baptist Church and St. Peter Baptist Church.

The last known burial occurred in 1991, after which the cemetery fell into neglect. A team of historians, church members and interested citizens began clearing the cemetery 18 months ago, and has uncovered about 55 of the approximately 200 graves believed to exist.

Members of the community interested in helping to clear the remaining portion are invited to e-mail andersoncemeteryleague@gmail.com.
