A man is dead after being shot by a Henrico County police officer in Highland Springs Wednesday evening.

It happened in the 1600 block of Elsing Green Court, not far from the intersection of East Nine Mile Road and South Airport Drive, shortly before 8 p.m., when police responded to a home after reports of a domestic-related incident. Police officials indicate that when officers entered the home, the man was holding a knife. Exact details of what happened next are unclear, but an officer fired at the man, striking him. The shooting victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later died. Police officials have not identified the man, and it is unknown whether he lived at the residence or not.

Several hours after the incident, police officials tweeted that the incident had occurred, and just before 11 p.m. they announced that the officer involved had been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure following a shooting incident.
