Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will offer discounted admission rates to people who receive food assistance, garden officials announced Jan. 3.

Anyone who receives food assistance through the SNAP program may simply present a SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer card and a valid ID and receive $1 admission to the garden per person for one or two adults and free admission for as many as six children (17 and younger). (The admission payment cannot be made with the EBT card, however)

The move is part of Museums for All, a signature access program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Association of Children’s Museums. The goal of the initiative is to encourage people from all backgrounds to visit gardens and museums regularly and build lifelong habits of visitation and participation.

Similar free and reduced admission is available to eligible members of the public at more than 250 museums throughout the country, including the Science Museum of Virginia.

The special opportunity also will apply for SNAP recipients who want to visit the Dominion GardenFest of Lights, which concludes Jan. 7.
