JRA seeks volunteers to water trees, remove invasives on Chapel Island

Table of Contents

In spring of 2021, a team of 25 volunteers joined with the James River Association to plant 480 trees on Chapel Island, located east of downtown Richmond near Rocketts Landing.

The first year of a tree’s life is critical to its survival, and the trees need continual watering to ensure they make it through the hot Richmond summer. Most of the trees were bareroot seedlings, but about 40 of them were container trees, which need extra TLC.  JRA is seeking volunteers who will come to Chapel Island on select Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., June through October, to assist JRA staff with watering the trees.

JRA also needs help in the ongoing habitat restoration project on the island. Volunteer opportunities for invasive species removal are offered every month on Mondays. Tools will be provided, but volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves.

JRA staff will meet volunteers in the parking lot at Great Shiplock Park at Dock and Pear Street.  (If it rains one inch or more during the week of the volunteer day, the trees will not need watering. Staff will reach out prior to each date with details.)
