Several county agencies are conducting a joint investigation after a child sustained non-life-threatening burns at John Rolfe Middle School in Varina Wednesday.

Henrico Fire and Police units responded to the school at about 12:30 p.m. after reports that the student had been burned.

A student who was "playing" with a lighter burned a classmate during science class, according to a message from Principal Debbie George to families of students in the class.

Rolfe’s school resource officer was on the property and responded until fire officials arrived to render aid. The victim was transported to an area hospital to receive treatment.

The Henrico Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation, supported by Henrico Police, Henrico Fire and Henrico Schools and in conjunction with the Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

School officials are taking appropriate disciplinary action as necessary, according to George.
