Aegis Jiu Jitsu, the first jiu jitsu studio in Henrico's West End, recently opened at 200 Towne Center West Boulevard, Suite 605.

The business, owned by Dave and Christine Kenworthy and Brett Scott, offers self-defense memberships to those ages six and up, including women-only classes, seminars and private group events.

Scott and the Kenworthys are veterans of jiu jitsu and small business. They wanted to created a family-friendly, modern atmosphere that provides customized instruction in a safe context.

“What really sets us apart is our positive culture, and that’s what guided the design of everything from our syllabi to our infrastructure," said head instructor Dave Kenworthy, a 16-year veteran of jiu jitsu, a first-degree black belt, and owner of two national medals in the discipline. "Aegis is a special space where our students should expect to learn valuable skills without undue pressure or abandoning fun.”

Jiu jitsu is akin to other martial arts in that it demands respect, discipline, and thoughtful execution. Called “human chess” and “the gentle art of choking,” it requires strategic thinking in addition to grappling skills. But its mechanics are also scalable, enabling students of varying ages and abilities to take part.
